Since launching his label last year, Raffaele Ascione has been making waves in the industry. Having already been picked up by the likes of The POP, Purple, Volt and 10 magazine, his sports-inspred but classically-cut Womenswear garments continually push the boundaries and defy conformity. The Label Line caught up with London-based designer Raffaele to talk women, design inspiration and American actress Clare Danes.

What’s the ethos behind the Raffaele Ascione brand?

My methodology behind my work is about making women feel more beautiful. I have an obsession with beauty. I have certain aspects that I consider as beautiful, and they are celebrated quite strongly in my work. It’s not about conceptual work, it’s about classic silhouettes that women can identify with topped off with sportswear elements; attention to detail is super crucial within my work.

What was the inspiration for your latest collection?

The latest Spring/Summer 2013 collection was a mash up of a lot of different things that I have been following for a while. You always have so many ideas that you can’t develop within one collection; I gathered all of those things and made them work together. Starting with old Fruit of the Loom jumpers that I de-constructed and combined these with complex new lace textiles and I also re-visited my A Line shape that I had developed on my Master Course at Central Saint Martins.

How has working for the likes of Gareth Pugh and MaxMara influenced your designs?

The aesthetics are very diverse, so it hasn’t affected my style but my work process? For sure. It’s about improving your process at all times and working with other companies definitely helps.

What made you want to start your own label?

Simple answer….it has always been my dream, and wanting to be my own boss!

What kind of woman do you have in mind when you’re designing?

Always my friends, it’s crucial to me to be inspired by the women that surround me. It makes the whole thing real and if it works for your friends then you know that you have completed a collection successfully.

For you, what piece really encapsulates the latest collection?

My new developed A-Line skirts, as these were constructed with pleating work that I am obsessed with. And also my jersey scuba-diving tops with lace and sequins embellishments.

If you could see any woman, living or dead, wearing your designs, who would it be?

I would say Claire Danes. She embodies so much to me. And my grandmother when she was younger, if she would have had the money.

Since starting the label and working in London, has your personal style changed at all?

No my personal style has always been very concrete, I am obsessed with sportswear and I like mixing this with casual wear.

Do you have a style icon that influences you personally?

I will have to go with my girlfriends; they are very expressive and diverse.

What does the future hold for Raffaele Ascione?

Taking things step by step, keep developing my brand and making it into a household name. You just have to make sure, your product stays exciting and you don’t miss out on important factors along the process!
